The Illusion of Tomorrow: How Our To-Do Lists Are Stealing Our Lives

It is that quiet hour of the day again—the early morning (or perhaps the late night) when the world around me has finally fallen silent. I am sitting alone with my cup of coffee, contemplating one of the greatest mistakes we make without even realizing it.

Procrastination.

We are conditioned to think of procrastination in terms of unread emails or unfinished projects. But the truth runs much deeper: we are procrastinating on life itself. Delaying things is one of life’s greatest errors. It robs us of our days as they arrive and denies the present by making empty promises about the future. Our biggest stumbling block is this heavy reliance on tomorrow, which ultimately costs us today. We tell ourselves: "I will rest when the kids are older," "I will enjoy the weekend once the house is clean," "I will finally breathe when this project is done."

Slaves to Our Own Efficiency

The pace of our lives has never been faster. I remember my years working as a head of internal audit—I was perpetually tethered to my office and my phone. The first thing I did upon waking, and the last thing before closing my eyes, was check my emails. Today, our workdays are heavier than ever, often bleeding late into the night. We cross continents for meetings, relentlessly optimize for speed and efficiency, and endure a constant, deafening bombardment of information.

But what would happen if, instead of rushing so frantically, we simply slowed down and started enjoying our lives?

Hurrying from one obligation to the next, desperate to get things done, we fall into the trap of writing endless to-do lists: household chores, meal prep, the daily commute, corporate tasks, the gym, the kids' soccer, swimming, or ballet practices, birthday parties, visiting friends, walking the dog...

The list is literally infinite. Are you exhausted just reading it? I was.

Amidst all of this, we unwittingly become slaves to our lists. We turn into creatures who are always doing, rather than simply being. We afford ourselves little to no time to feel, to experience the richness of our own existence. We begin to function like well-oiled robots, and after a while, we are left with a heavy, vague sensation that our lives are unfulfilled, empty, and stripped of all vitality. This is the true, quiet face of motherhood burnout.

The Escape into Routine

How many women do you know who are entirely consumed by their work, suffering from stress-related illnesses, and yet remain completely unable to slow their pace?

They cannot stop because they use their routine as a shield. They use the distraction of constant busyness to reduce their lives strictly to the practical, avoiding the terrifying reality of their own exhaustion. Sometimes, we humans just need a little help remembering how to slow down and appreciate what we have in the present moment, rather than perpetually chasing what we desire.

Time to Hoist the Sails

Let us remember the words of Mark Twain: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do."

So, hoist the sails. Sail away from the safe, suffocating harbor of your endless to-do lists. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. And most importantly—give yourself permission to breathe today, not tomorrow.
